The Heart of the Matter: Love and Health Intertwined

Hello, my LYLWL friends,

Happy Love Month! I can’t believe it’s already February. Time truly does fly, doesn’t it? As we embrace this month of love, I want to share something deeply personal and yet universally important: the intricate relationship between self-love, our health, and how this fusion is essential for nurturing loving relationships with others.

Reflecting on my journey as a registered nurse for over 32 years, my career has been built on caring for others—a role I cherish deeply. Yet, there came a moment of stark realization: here I was, advising others about health, while personally, I was overweight, drained of energy, and on a fast track to severe health issues, potentially facing a heart attack or stroke before the age of 45.

This epiphany led me to a path of self-care, a journey I want to share with you through a side-by-side picture of myself, highlighting the transformation. It was a wake-up call to not only preach but also practice the gospel of health.

The Heart of the Matter: Love and Health Intertwined

So, what can we do to embark on this journey of self-love and heart health?

First, let’s talk about the basics of reducing our risk for heart disease and strokes, drawing upon insights and recommendations from the American Heart Association. Key tips include embracing a heart-healthy diet, regular physical activity, reducing stress, and ensuring we get enough sleep. These are foundational steps to loving ourselves and, by extension, our hearts.

But beyond these practical steps, it’s about finding a balance and taking time to nurture joy and fulfillment in our lives. This equilibrium is the essence of self-love, which, in turn, lays the foundation for healthy, loving relationships with others.

As we continue through this month of love, let’s commit to loving ourselves first. By taking care of our hearts, we are better equipped to share love and health with those around us.

Wishing everyone a month filled with love, health, and happiness.
